Stadium Facts:
Seating:15,000 permanent seats
1,230 additional seats available in ten sections of portable bleachers
Parking: 2,000 on-site parking spaces - 8,000 off-site parking spaces
Measurements: The Skydome has a total area of 272,00 square feet, (6.2acres) and a diameter of 502 feet. The height of the dome ceiling is 142 feet measured from the inside floor level. The arena floor is 97,000 square feet. There are 132 doors around the dome and one 17' x 17' freight door
Roof: One and One half million board feet of Southern Yellow Pine went into the construction of the computer designed wood roof. The roof consists of a spherical framework of triangles connected by patented hubs. The framework system is made entirely of glue laminated, all wood beams.
The Skydome was named for former University President Dr. J. Lawrence Walkup. (1958 - 1979). The Skydome is the second largest clear-span timber dome in the world. Nestled in the cool pines of Northern Arizona University's Campus, the Skydome opened on September 17, 1977; two years and eight million dollars after ground breaking.
The Skydome is a multipurpose building which provides facilities for football, basketball, indoor track and field, soccer, weight lifting, lacrosse, student recreation, major concert events, commencements, intramurrals, and a variety of other university and community activities.
The Skydome is the NAU center for the successful Athletics Department as well as Administrative Offices, Sports Information, NAU Trademark Licensing, and Fields and Facilities.
